Barbados recall Browne for Super50
Bridgetown, Barbados, CMC – Former West Indies wicketkeeper Patrick Browne has been recalled for Barbados’ Super 50 campaign after over a protracted stint in the wilderness. The 29-year-old, who played five One-Day Internationals for West Indies in 2008, was named in a 14-man squad on Friday for the October 18 to 29 showpiece in Guyana.
Leading all-rounder Ryan Hinds, who led Barbados to a share of the title last year, has been included despite his axing as captain. The squad will be without Test batsmen Kraigg Brathwaite and Kirk Edwards, and speedsters Fidel Edwards and Kemar Roach who will be on West Indies duty in Bangladesh.
Browne, however, has not featured in the selectors’ frame in over a year. His last first class match came in January last year and he has not played one-dayers for Barbados in nearly three years. He owes his good fortune to the absence of 19-year-old Shane Dowrich who has become the first choice gloveman but is away on duty with the High Performance Centre in Dubai.
Browne, who averages a decent 33 in ODIs, is a seasoned campaigner with over 60 first class matches and 26 limited over games under his belt. He is one of several experienced faces in the squad. Left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn has been included along with all-rounder Dwayne Smith who is currently in England with the Windies Twenty20 squad, and fiery pacer Tino Best.
Opener Dale Richards, who has also played for West Indies, is among the 14. The side will be led by new captain Kenroy Williams who has replaced Hinds.
SQUAD: Kenroy Williams (captain), Tino Best, Sulieman Benn, Rashidi Boucher, Carlos Brathwaite, Patrick Browne, Jonathan Carter, Ryan Hinds, Kyle Hope, Ashley Nurse, Dale Richards, Javon Searles, Dwayne Smith, Kevin Stoute.
