Dominica secure Windwards title with win over St Lucia
Dominica are the winners of the inaugural Windward Islands T20 Tournament after a hard-fought victory over St Lucia in the final round of matches on Sunday. Playing at Arnos Vale in St Vincent, the Dominicans made 135-7 off their 20 overs and then limited the St Lucians to 112-7 off their 20 overs to win by 23 runs.
Off-spinner Liam Sebastien was the star player for Dominica with 4-28, while fellow off-spinner Shane Shillingford took 2-27. In the Dominica innings opener Tyrone Theophile topscored with 52, while Sebastien was excellent at the death with 24 not out.
In the other final round match, St Vincent and the Grenadines beat Grenada by 33 runs to clinch third spot. Salvan Browne slammed 51 and Donwell Hector hit 42 to lead SVG to 132-8 off their 20 overs, with fast bowler Nelon Pascal taking 3-21. In response, Grenada made just 99 in 17.5 overs – Rawl Lewis topscored with 24, while spinner Alston Bobb took 3-15.
The Windwards players used the weeklong tournament as warm-up for the West Indies Cricket Board’s Caribbean T20 Tournament to be played in Barbados and Trinidad from July 22 to 31. The Windwards will compete in Zone B alongside Barbados, Guyana, Combined Campuses & Colleges, and Windward Islands. Zone A includes Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Canada.
The Windwards take on Guyana on July 23 at 4 pm at Kensington Oval in Barbados and return to the same venue two days later to meet Barbados at 6 pm. Their final preliminary match will be against Combined Campuses & Colleges at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad on July 29 at 8 pm.
