Leaders Guyana to face Windwards in TCL Group Under-19 third round
Tournament-leaders Guyana will meet with the Windward Islands when the third round of matches in the TCL Group Under-19 Challenge three-day tournament bowls off on Friday. The two sides will do battle at Gros Islet at 10 am (9 am Jamaica Time). Guyana lead with 15 points after two rounds, while the Windwards are on nine points from their two matches.
The second match will see the Jamaicans facing the Leewards at Beausejour Cricket Stadium. The Jamaicans are on nine points, while the Leewards are at the bottom on the table on three points. Jermaine Blackwood, the 18-year-old right-hander from Jamaica, has been the tournament’s leading batsman with a superb double century against Guyana and a brilliant 90 not out against Trinidad and Tobago in the first round and he will be looking to continue his good form.
“It is a wonderful experience for me so far in this year’s tournament. I always knew I had it in me to do so. I worked very hard for it. My coach (Robert Samuels) encouraged me to bat long hours, session by session, and it paid off in the end. I targeted 420 runs before I came into this competition, but it seems like I will have to revise that now,” he said.
The Leeward suffered a setback as right- handed batsman Nordel Lake and slow bowling allrounder Shaquille Martina have both been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to injury. They will be replaced by opener Daran Webb and allrounder Jamal Fernandez.
In the final match, Barbados are on 12 points and in second position. They will face Trinidad and Tobago (nine points) in a key encounter at Dennery Playing Field. The Bajans had an impressive batting performance in the last round against Leewards, making 350-6 declared to gain first innings lead in the rain interrupted match.
Barbados manager Livy Coppin said his players were looking forward to the match and will be looking to take the lead in the tournament. He said: “The team had a net session at Gros Islet on Thursday are in extremely high spirits. After the upcoming round of matches we will know exactly where we stand.”
