Williams welcomes WICB Regional 50 Over Tournament prior to SL tour

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad - Assistant coach of the West Indies senior cricket team David Williams says the playing the regional one day series before the tour to Sri Lanka in November, is a good move by the WICB.

According to Williams: “The West Indies team will be playing a series of Tests and one day matches in Sri Lanka in early November and having the regional 50 Over Tournament played before that tour, would serve the players well.”

The WICB has carded the Regional 50 Overs Tournament in Jamaica for October.

The West Indies will tour Sri Lanka from the first week of November.

Williams continued: “Although the tournament will be a limited overs tournament, it is 50 overs and hence it would help in the players preparation.

“At the moment head coach Ottis Gibson is in Canada with the Sagicor High Performance Center team and when he gets back he is supposed to map out a period when we will stage a camp for the players. After this camp they will leave for Sri Lanka. We are hoping that when the players come to the camp, they are ready for cricket, having played in the regional series.”

On the point of the players’ fitness, Williams said it will improve with time.

“We have an excellent trainer in Hector Martinez-Charles and I have noticed his work and am very happy with it. He has done a wonderful job in terms of fitness with the players and I think that as the players continue their training programme, they will get better and better, to a point that is satisfying to them.”
