Antiguans to face Anguillans in Leeward Islands 50-Over final
Phillipsburg, St Maarten - Anguilla will face defending champions Antigua and Barbuda in Sunday’s final of the NAGICO-sponsored Leeward Islands 50-Over Tournament. The Anguillans defeated St Maarten by five wickets off the last ball in their semi-final, while the Antiguans had a hard-fought two-wicket win over Nevis.
Left-hander Chesney Hughes and the in-form Montcin Hodge both made half-centuries to fire Anguilla to victory. Hughes got 70 and Hodge scored 74 as Anguilla, chased down the 227 for victory in a game reduced to 43 overs because of rain at the Caribe Lumber Park. The pair added 123 for the second wicket but both fell before the target was achieved. Omari Banks was the man in the end to guide them home with a mature finished 43 not out.
Earlier, winning the toss and electing to bat, St Maarten posted 226 all out from 41 overs with a topscore of 43 from Maxford Pipe and guest player Darren Sammy smashed 41.
In the other semi-final, right-hander Devon Thomas hit an unbeaten 47 to guide Antigua and Barbuda home, after the Nevisians were bowled out for 201 off 33.4 overs. Winning the toss and deciding to bat in a game reduced to 36 overs per side because of rain, Nevis suffered a middle-order batting slump and were dismissed for 201 from 33.4 overs.
Javier Liburd continued his excellent form with 90 off 74 balls including 10 fours and three sixes, following on from his 92 against Anguilla. Left-hander Kieran Powell made 38 while off-spinner Justin Athanaze was the most successful bowler for Antigua with three for 55 from eight overs. Leg-spinner Anthony Martin (2-23) and off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall (2-33) took two wickets apiece.
In reply Antigua and Barbuda started well with Rahkeem Cornwall (41) and
Kadeem Phillip (36) providing a good platform but then they lost a flurry of wickets before Thomas secured the victory. Athanaze (25) and Gavin Williams (18) also batted well near the end.
