Shillingford wins national award

Roseau, Dominica, CMC – West Indies cricketer Shane Shillingford has been named as Dominica’s Sports Personality-of-the-Year for a second straight year.

The tall off-spinner copped the award earlier this week, when the Sports Division in collaboration with the Ministry of Sport held its annual National Sports Awards in recognition of deserving sportspeople for the year.

“I just want to say thank you to all those who have made it possible and have helped me on my way thus far,” he said.  “I am really happy to have received this award. Receiving this award has served as motivation and determination for me to continue to work hard, and to resume my international career.”

Shillingford made his Test debut last year against South Africa in Trinidad, after almost a decade of playing in the regional first-class championship.

After several years of toil, he finally came into his own during the A-Team’s matches with some broilliant performances in Bangladesh last year.

Last December, he was suspended from bowling in international cricket, after his action was found to be illegal, following independent tests in Perth.

Sannika Yankey, the 2010 CARIFTA gold medallist, copped the award for women, defeating West Indies Women’s player Pearl Etienne. Kavem Hodge, who is currently on duty with the West Indies Under-19 team, was voted as the Young Sports Personality-of-the-Year.
