Guyana have Leewards on the ropes

Georgetown, Guyana, CMC – Leeward Islands were slipping to an innings defeat against a rampant Guyana at the end of the second day of the opening round of matches in the WICB Regional Under-19 Championship on Tuesday.

At the close on a rain-hit day at the National Stadium, the Leewards were struggling on 112 for six in their second innings, still 98 runs away from avoiding a heavy defeat.

Earlier, Guyana declared at tea on 317 for nine in reply to the Leewards 107, to take a lead of 210 runs.
Resuming the day at 151 for three, 17-year-old Chanderpaul Hemraj took his overnight 72 to 88 before he clipped a Shaquille Martina full toss to short mid-wicket after batting for 243 minutes, 168 balls and hitting 11 fours.

Vice captain Kwame Crosse, who took his first day 30 to 61 from 168 balls with six fours, shared in a 117-run fourth wicket stand with Hemraj while Clinton Pestano made 43 and skipper Ronsford Beaton made 39 not out. Burly Antiguan Rahkeem Cornwall, in his fourth year at this level, earned four for 56 with his gentle off-spin while Larry Audain supported with two for 46.

Hemraj seemed headed for his seventh career century when he perished 12 short, leaving Guyana 171 for four. Crosse was taken at short mid-wicket off Chavil Archibald at 226 after reaching his third half-century at this level. Clinton Pestano attacked the bowling and along with Anthony Adams took the score to 261 before Adams (4) fell to Cornwall’s off-breaks.
Pestano was removed by Duan Webb four runs later after his cameo 43 lasted 50 balls and included five fours and a six, as Guyana raised crucial runs after tea was extended to 3.40 pm.

In the Leewards second turn at the crease, Beaton clean bowled Webb without scoring with just a run on the board while two wickets tumbled at 23 as Elijah Peters (11) and Martina (12) departed. Larry Audain (7) was lbw to Amir Khan (2-29) at 55 for four and Akeem Saunders stroked six fours in 44 before he was trapped lbw by left-arm spinner Gudakesh Moite.
