Rain puts damper on Under-19s

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Heavy rain associated with the passage of Tropical Storm Isaac wrecked the third round of matches in the WICB Regional Under-19 50-over Championship here Wednesday.

While play got underway in two of the three scheduled fixtures, they had to be eventually abandoned as torrential showers engulfed the country. The country was also lashed with heavy early morning rain as Tropical Storm Isaac passed north and headed into the island chain.

WICB Under-19 50-over Round 2

Bridgetown, Barbados — A superb century by opener Shimron Hetmeyer was the highlight of the second round of the West Indies Cricket Board’s Under-19 50-over tournament as he led Guyana to 59-run victory Windward Islands in a high-scoring match on Monday.
Hetmeyer went after the bowling from the get-go and played a number of authentic shots as the bulk of his runs came square of the wicket. He raced to 116 off 118 balls with 14 fours and two sixes as Guyana rattled up 317-8 off 50 overs on a batsman-friendly surface at the Friendship Cricket Ground.

Windies dealt knockout blow

India and New Zealand booked a semi-final clash against each other after registering thrilling wins in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Super League quarter-finals on Monday.

India held on to clinch an enthralling one-wicket win against rivals Pakistan, while New Zealand snatched a win from the jaws of defeat over an in-form West Indies at Endeavour Park.

At the Tony Ireland Stadium, India and Pakistan, played out a typically tense match.

WICB Under-19 First Round Results

Bridgetown, Barbados — Trinidad and Tobago made an impressive start to the West Indies Cricket Board’s Under-19 50-over Tournament, while Barbados and Guyana also recorded comfortable victories on the opening day on Sunday.

The Trinis made a huge statement as they hammered the Leeward Islands by a whopping 161 runs at Friendship. Nicholas Pooran made whirlwind century, while Stephan Wharwood and Anthony Simmons topped up with blazing half-centuries as T&T made 332-6 off their 50 overs. They went on an all-out attack as 140 runs came in the final 10 overs.

Windies ready for NZ challenge

Brisbane, Australia - West Indies and New Zealand will go face-to-face in the quarter-finals of the International Cricket Council Under-19 World Cup on Monday (Sunday 7.30 pm Eastern Caribbean Time/6.30 pm Jamaica Time).

The two teams will feature at Endeavour Park 1. Both sides have appeared in an ICC U19 Cricket World Cup final but are yet to win it. New Zealand lost the final to England in 1998 while the West Indies lost to Pakistan in the 2004 final.
