Sammy wins St Lucia's top award

CASTRIES, St  Lucia, CMC - West Indies captain Darren Sammy has been named St. Lucia’s Senior Male Cricketer of 2011. The Female Cricketer of the Year award was won by national women’s vice-captain Swayline Williams.

Windward Islands Under-17 captain Larry Edward and Tara Louis captured the Junior Male and Female awards. Sammy had a year of mixed fortunes as West Indies captain, both at home and abroad.

Kirk Edwards wins Barbados award

Bridgetown, Barbados, CMC -- Describing it as a “good feeling” to be named Barbados’ Sports Personality for 2011, new national captain and West Indies Test batsman Kirk Edwards has attributed his success to hard work in the face of constant challenges.

“It is a good feeling knowing that people recognise your achievements throughout the year and (it is) satisfying that the hard work has paid off,” Edwards told the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) website.

T&T to play in Bajan festival

Bridgetown, Barbados – Caribbean Twenty20 champions Trinidad and Tobago are among four teams scheduled to take part in a T20 Festival organised by Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) at the 3Ws Oval here from January 3-6.

The other teams are Barbados, CCC and a CO Williams All Star XI, which will be led by former West Indies Under-19 captain Shamarh Brooks and will also include fast bowler Christopher Jordan, who plays for Surrey in the English County Championship.

Jason Mohammed "thinking big"

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Rookie West Indies One-Day International batsman Jason Mohammed says he is bent on maintaining his place in the side despite failing in his solitary match on the recent tour to India.

The diminutive Trinidad & Tobago player made his debut in the fifth and final ODI in Chennai on December 11 and found it tough, scoring only two off 21 balls at Number 4 as West Indies were beaten by 34 runs for India to wrap up the five-match series 4-1.

Stuart Williams to coach Leewards

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Stuart Williams will take over the job of head coach of the Leeward Islands for the West Indies Cricket Board’s Caribbean Twenty20 Championship.

The former Leeward Islands captain and West Indies opener takes over from Leon Rodney for the tournament to be staged from January 9 to 22 in Antigua and Barbados.
