WI threaten before England win

LONDON – Two wickets – one apiece to Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel – before lunch gave England a scare, but failed to ignite West Indies and they went under by five wickets in the first Test on Monday.

LONDON – Kemar Roach followed up defiant West Indies batting, again led by Shivnarine Chanderpaul, with two late wickets on Sunday to leave the first Test against England heading for a dramatic finish.

Gabriel hails Shiv, welcomes debut

LONDON – West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel gave England little or no comfort either on or off the field after leading the West Indies attack in the first Test.

Gabriel marked his Test debut with the promising figures of three wickets for 60 runs from 21.3 overs, as England were bowled out for 398 to grab a 155-run, first innings lead on the third day at Lord’s on Saturday.

Chanderpaul, Samuels steady WI

LONDON, England – An unbroken fifth-wicket stand between Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels, steadied West Indies after a disastrous 10-minute period before tea left them rocking in the first Test against England on Saturday here.

Chanderpaul was not out on 34 and Samuels was not out on 26, as they staged a fight-back, carrying the Windies to 120 for four at the close on the third day at Lord’s.

Incisive bowling key says Radford

LONDON – Toby Radford said West Indies have little room for error, when the first Test against England resumes on Saturday.

The West Indies assistant coach said West Indies needed to make early inroads into the English batting on the third day at Lord’s, after Andrew Strauss stroked his 20th Test hundred, an undefeated 121, to lead his side to 259 for three when bad light ended the second day two deliveries into the second new ball.
