WI U19s undermined by Rahatul’s spin
GEORGETOWN, Guyana – West Indies Under-19s stumbled to a 63-run defeat in their Youth One-day International series against Bangladesh Under-19s on Wednesday here, after Rahatul Ferdous followed half-centuries from Mossadek Hossain and Jashimuddin with a destructive spell of spin bowling.
Jeremy Solozano led the way for the Windies Under-19s with 44 from 77 balls, but the hosts were restricted to 196 for nine from their allocation of 50 overs, replying to Bangladesh Under-19s 259 for seven in the second Youth ODI at Bourda Oval.
Jofra Archer made 35 for the West Indies Under-19s, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of West Indies batting stalwart Shivnarine Chanderpaul, scored 25, and Tristan Coleman and Shimron Hetmyer added 21 apiece, but the Caribbean side’s batting was undermined by the left-arm spin of Rahatul, who finished with 5-55 from his allotment of 10 overs.
The result meant that the Bangladeshis drew level 1-1 in the seven-match series, which continues on Friday, when the two sides meet under the lights again at the Guyana National Stadium.
Wayward West Indies Under-19 bowling saw Mossadek take advantage with 70 from 119 balls that included five fours and Man-of-the-Match Jashimuddin struck eight fours in 63 from 81 balls in a third-wicket stand of 92.
The Windies Under-19s failed to find discipline with their bowling, leaking 41 extras including a whopping 26 wides, as Nazmul Hossain Shanto gathered 42, sharing 62 for the fourth wicket with Jashimuddin, and opener Shadman Islam got 23.
Off-spinner Bryan Charles, along with new-ball bowlers Jerome Jones and Jofra Archer grabbed two wickets apiece for the home team, but hometown kid, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai was the most economical, taking 1-33 from his 10 overs.
