T&T U-17s snatch WICB title
Trinidad Express article.
SCRABROUGH, TOBAGO - They had to play catch-up for most of the tournament but the Trinidad and Tobago Under-17s beat the odds to clinch the 2013 Regional Under-17 title after their final round win over Guyana at Louis D’or, Tobago yesterday.
Heading into the final round, Barbados were in the lead, 0.9 points ahead of the hosts, but the Bajans lost their final match to the Leeward Islands by 35 runs at Bon Accord to finish second.
Last year’s winners Jamaica finished fifth following their 24-run loss to the Windward Islands at Mt Pleasant.
Guyana could have upset the hosts after Shimron Hetmyer slammed a century—105 off 63 balls—to lead his team to a competitive 242 all out after they won the toss and elected to bat first.
But T&T replied with 247 for six off 49.4 overs with Jameel Jeron Maniram slamming his second unbeaten half century of the tournament—94 not out—to lead the victory charge.
Brandon Jaggernauth also chipped in with 45 not out while opening batsman Amir Jangoo laid the platform for the win with his 48 off 95 balls at the top of the innings.
T&T went into the game with the strategy of all their bowlers bowling medium pace to try and get enough bonus points to overtake Barbados.
Teams got 0.1 bonus points for every wicket taken by a pacer.
T&T’s plan backfired as Hetmyer took a liking to the medium pace, slamming 13 fours and five sixes in an entertaining hour and a half in the middle.
He also put on a 148-run with Ronaldo Renee (46) for the second wicket.
However T&T came back strong after the bowlers reverted to spin, with Bryan Boodram snatching three for 36 and off-spinner Carl Vialva chipping in with two for 29 to lead the fight back.
Maniram then slammed ten fours and four sixes in his 86-ball knock while Jaggernauth hit three fours and three sixes in his 37-ball innings in an unbeaten 109-run sixth wicket partnership to seal the result.
