Thomas strikes ton but T&T leave it late

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Trinidad & Tobago left it late on Day 3 to dismiss the Combined Campuses & Colleges in their second innings and set up a short Day 4.

The Trinis had to ride out an early charge by Shacaya Thomas and Kyle Corbin, who gave the College Students a much better start to their second innings than they had in the first.

CCC only added a mere two runs at the start of the day as they were bowled out for 144, losing their last two wickets within the first two overs of the start. Without hesitation, T&T enforced the follow on.

However, even with a first innings lead of 307 runs, T&T would face a much different CCC batting line up in the second innings. The opening pair of Anthony Alleyne and Thomas put on a solid 61 runs for the opening stand. The latter really should not have been allowed to score.

Without a run on the board, Thomas pulled Shannon Gabriel to fine-leg where a high catch was put down by Ricky Jaipaul. Both batsmen would make T&T pay for the drop. However, Alleyne seemed to lose concentration when Kieron Pollard entered the attack, driving a catch straight to mid-off.

Thomas then joined in a 120-run stand with Kyle Corbin. Both batsmen batted patiently and solidly. Both seemed to be on course for big scores. Corbin got past his 50, and continued batting fluently. But when he tried to clear mid-off off Jason Mohammed, substitute fielder, Marlon Richards, took a good catch running back. Corbin was out for 65, having hit five fours and two sixes.

Thomas soldiered on, though he lost Raymon Reifer as a partner soon after. He brought up his second First Class century but then seemed to lose concentration. When on 116, he played back to a ball from Jaipaul and missed. He was trapped LBW. He faced 189 balls, hitting ten fours and two sixes.

Jaipaul then sprung to life, removing three more batsmen. Wicket-keeper, Chadwick Walton, resisted T&T with an aggressive 73 from 111 balls, but the hosts bowled out the College Students for 330 on the stroke of Stumps. Jaipaul, who was largely ineffective throughout the day finished with 4-56.

It left T&T with 24 runs to get to win. At 10:30pm, both captains met in the middle with the Umpires and decided they'll come back on Monday afternoon to complete the game.
