Thomas stands out in Leewards camp

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - An aggressive half century by Devon Thomas was the standout performance at the Leeward Islands training camp on Wednesday (Jan.22) to help Steve Liburd XI fight on day two of a three-day trial match at the Conaree Cricket Ground.
In response to 338 all out posted by Sylvester Joseph XI on day one, Thomas led his team’s fight in pursuit of the opposition’s total.
Thomas of Antigua and Barbuda made a stroke filled 67 with shots all around the ground and was the main contributor in his team’s effort. Monticin Hodge of Anguilla also chipped in with 29 and Jacques Taylor of St. Kitts added 27.
One supporter in commending Thomas’ innings declared,” Why can’t the others do like him? He makes batting look so easy.”
Rakiem Cornwall was the chief wicket taker picking up three wickets for 63 runs. He was supported by Alzarri Joseph and Hayden Walsh Jr. who picked up two wickets each.
In their second time at the crease, Sylvester Joseph’s XI were cruising at 70-0 at stumps with Nevis’ Javier Liburd not out on 54, which featured some towering sixes and confident stroke play to dominate Steve Liburd’s XI bowling attack.
Sylvester Joseph’s XI were ahead by 223 runs.
In their first innings Sylvester Joseph’s XI scored 338 all out with the top score coming from captain Joseph with 76 and he was ably supported by Wendell Richards (60) and Akeem Saunders (52).
The 30-member camp is in preparation for the upcoming Regional 50 over and Four Day Tournaments. They are also expected to play in three 50 over games scheduled for this weekend.
