Permaul puts Guyana on victory path
GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Combined Campuses and Colleges were sliding towards another defeat in the Regional Four-Day Championship after suffering a batting collapse against Guyana here Monday.
Set 240 for victory, CCC finished the penultimate day of their fourth round match on 114 for six, still 126 runs adrift of their target heading into Tuesday’s final day at the National Stadium at Providence.
Captain Kyle Corbin top scored with 35 while all-rounder Raymon Reifer was unbeaten on 22.
Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul has so far taken two for 15.
Earlier, the students did well to reduce Guyana to 175 all out, with Akeem Dewar (3-21), Nekoli Parris (3-50) and Ryan Austin (3-55) all finishing with three wickets apiece.
Steven Jacobs stroked 45, Leon Johnson, 37, and West Indies batsman Assad Fudadin got 27 but Guyana collapsed from a position of 154 for five, losing their last five wickets for 21 runs.
Resuming at 44 for one, Fudadin and Johnson carried the score to 58 before they were separated when Johnson was caught at silly point off Parris after facing 60 balls in 68 minutes at the crease and striking five fours and a six.
Soon afterward at 74 for three, Fudadin was lbw to fast bowler Kesrick Williams, ending an innings that lasted 70 balls, 97 minutes and included three boundaries.
Test players Narsingh Deonarine (7) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (13) fell cheaply but Jacobs kept the innings together with a knock that consumed 57 balls and 113 minutes, and contained two fours.
In their run chase, CCC then crashed to 23 for three in their second innings before Corbin and veteran Floyd Reifer stabilised the innings with a fourth wicket stand of 41.
Corbin faced 88 balls in 103 minutes and struck three boundaries while Reifer made 18 before edging leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo to Sarwan at slip, after facing 47 balls and striking three fours.
Corbin was going well before he nicked a short ball from fast bowler Ronsford Beaton behind and CCC needed Raymon Reifer’s knock to keep them alive.
