Moosai women retain league title

PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD - National players Amanda Samaroo, Kirbyiana Alexander and Leeann Kirby came up big to help Moosai retain their Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Cricket Association (TTWCA) Premiership 40-over league title with a 31-run win over Phoenix at the Aranguez ground on Saturday.

The defending champions who have played unbeaten since last season got half-centuries and two wickets each from Samaroo and Alexander while Kirby captured four wickets. 

Moosai batting first posted 158 for nine from their allotted overs. Samaroo (64) and Alexander (57) who opened the innings put on 102 for the first wicket. Samaroo’s knock included seven fours while Alexander hit the boundary ropes eight times. 

However, they suffered a middle order collapse as eight wickets fell for just 56 runs. Britney Cooper, Loretta Eligon and Leeandra Ramdeen each took two wickets. 

In their turn at the wicket Phoenix were in early trouble losing their first wicket with the score on seven as Kirby had Karishma Ramdeo caught by Chedean Nation.

It soon became 16 for two and then 31 for three. Shenelle Lord who top scored with 37, added 22 for the fourth wicket with skipper Cooper (19) before adding 32 with Samantha Bissoon (15) for the fifth wicket. 

Once this partnership was broken it was all over for Phoenix and their last five wickets fell for 42 runs. 

Kirby finished with four for 20 while Samaroo and Alexander had two for 23 and two for 26 respectively. 

Moosai will now turn their attention to the 30-over Knock Out tournament which starts this weekend.
