Moosai aim to strengthen lead

PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD - Premier Division leaders Moosai Sports will be gunning for their fifth outright win of the season when they host third place First Citizens Clarke Road United in round seven of the competition, bowling off at 10 a.m. today at Honeymoon Park, El Dorado.

Moosai have 149 points from seven matches but will be under pressure to complete another outright win with PowerGen Penal just six points behind in second place and Clarke Road 13 points behind the leaders in third.

Clarke Road have yet to lose outright this season with a record of three wins and four draws and solid performances from their batsmen as well as their bowlers.

Ranga Latchana and Ryan Ramdass lead the batting for the Penal-based club with two centuries each, including one each in their drawn match against Alescon Comets in the previous round.

Spinners Shazan Babwah, Mukesh Persad and Sanjiv Gooljar will be spearheading the Clarke Road bowling attack, which will be strengthened by the inclusion of young left-arm orthodox bowler Derone Davis.

Trinidad and Tobago wicket-keeper Nicholas Pooran is also expected to be back in the Clarke Road line-up along with their foreign professional 22-year-old Anthony Bramble of Guyana.

Moosai also have some in-form players in their ranks. All-rounder Navin Stewart is leads the list after scoring his first National League century in the club’s win over F&E Diamond United in the previous round.

Middle-order batsman Ewart Nicholson came close to his first century for the club, reaching 97 last weekend while T&T batsman Kjorn Ottley also scored a half century against Diamond.

Guyanese leg-spinner Amir Khan was also in good form for Moosai last weekend, grabbing six for 29.

Moosai will also get a boost with Barbados all-rounder Javon Searles coming back into the line-up for the match.

Elsewhere, PowerGen Penal will also be hunting their fifth win of the season when they face Merry Boys at Diego Martin Recreation Ground.

PowerGen defeated Caldrac by an innings and 57 runs in their previous match while Merry Boys, who are in sixth place with 99 points, were held to a draw against Esmeralda.

Defending champions Queen’s Park Cricket Club, who are in fifth place with 123 points will also be in action this weekend against Caldrac (92 points) while Esmeralda (93 points) tackle Diamond United at Kennedy Park, Diamond.

In the other matches this weekend, Alescon Comets will be hoping to get their campaign back on track after slipping from first to fourth on the standings after their previous three matches ended in draws.

Despite the slide, Comets will be encouraged by their centurion Steven Katwaroo, who scored 145 not out and 63 in their match against Clarke Road last weekend.

Comets host Hafeez Karamath Limited Aranjuez Sports at Pierre Road this weekend.

All matches start today at 10 a.m. and continue tomorrow from 9:30 a.m.
