Mahico, Liberta draw as rain intervenes
Antigua Observer article.
ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Whether or not rain rescued PIC Liberta from their first defeat of the 2013 cricket season on Tuesday, we will never know.
What we do know is that Liberta were floundering at 29 for two after four overs against Cecil Charles Mahico before play was called off in the Cool & Smooth ABCA Twenty20 tournament.
Competing in the feature game of a double-header at Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds, Liberta in their reply to a target of 107 set by Mahico, lost two quick wickets as Kadeem Phillip and Kerry Mentor both fell to veteran Vaughn “Hungry” Walsh for scores of one and naught, respectively.
Liberta were 29 for two off 4.4 overs when rain ended play which means that the teams will each be awarded a single point for the draw.
Captain of the Mahico team and former national and West Indies player Ridley Jacobs expressed disappointment that fans did not get the opportunity to see what he believed would have been an entertaining climax.
“I thought it was a really good game. We didn’t really score the amount of runs that we were looking for actually but I thought that ’Hungry’ Walsh came in and really put the ball in the right areas and bowled with some real pace and had Liberta on their back-foot and I thought that we were in a very good position at the time when the rain came but that’s the way it is sometimes,” Jacobs said.
