Leeward Islands' Leroy Coury Has Died
 

Basseterre, St. Kitts – The cricketing fraternity in St. Kitts and Nevis and indeed the entire West Indies, is today mourning the loss of one of the finest leg break bowlers the sport has ever seen.

As a consequence, the tributes have started as cricket fans honour the memory of the late Leroy Coury, who represented St. Kitts and the Leeward Islands, after starting his career in the 1950s and ending in the late 1960s. 

First reports of Mr. Coury’s death emerged on Monday, 22nd October, 2012, though no confirmed details have been formally released to explain the cause of his untimely passing. 

Mr. Coury first represented St. Kitts as a leg break and googly bowler in the 1958 Leeward Islands Tournament which was played in St. Kitts. He was a permanent member of the St. Kitts Cricket Team until his retirement from the regional game in 1969. He was a key member of the St. Kitts teams which dominated Leeward Islands cricket in the 1960s. He bowled St. Kitts to many victories in that decade. He was a true master of the art and guile of leg spin bowling.  

According to the St. Kitts Cricket Association, that released a statement on Wednesday, “Along with left arm spinner Edgar Gilbert this duo formed the most formidable spin combination to have ever played in Leeward Islands Tournaments.” 

Leroy Coury also represented the Leeward Islands Cricket Team in Regional and International Cricket Matches. He last represented the Leeward Islands Cricket Team at Warner Park against the touring Australian Cricket Team in 1965. 

After his retirement Mr.Coury retained an active interest in the game and through his business he assisted many young cricketers with financial support, cricket gear and advice. 

Up to the time of his passing Mr. Coury was a member of the St. Kitts Cricket Association. 

The President and other Executive Members of the St. Kitts Cricket Association and the entire membership of the Cricket Association have extended sincere condolences to his wife Helen, his sons Christopher and Marlon and the entire Coury Family.
