Khan - Crowds will be crucial for Antigua
Antigua Observer article.
St John's, Antigua - WICB Corporate Communications Manager Imran Khan said public attendance during three upcoming One Day International matches here could determine whether or not Antigua benefits from a future England tour.
“England is touring next year and depending on the turnout it will have an impact as to whether there would be a possibility of England coming back to Antigua next year,” he said.
“You have been speaking at length as to how important it is for cricket to come to Antigua for economic purposes and for the benefit of all the people in Antigua & Barbuda; all the taxi drivers, the vendors and so on, so it’s really a tremendous boost to the economy.”
England will play three ODIs against West Indies at Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds starting February 28.
The public, Khan said, will have the opportunity to see England in a warm-up match next week.
“There is a practice match on Tuesday between England and the Vice Chancellor’s XI, so all preparations are in place and we are ready to host that match and admission to that match is actually free. So we encourage fans to come out and have a look at that. (Devon Thomas), Alzari Joseph and Hayden Walsh Jr have been drafted into the Vice Chancellor’s XI so there is a good likelihood that they would both be playing as well,” he said.
The WICB employee also thanked both political parties for the part they’ve played in promoting the upcoming matches.
“There have been daily ads placed by the government in The Daily OBSERVER encouraging fans to come out to the matches and last night at one of the ABLP political rallies, Paul ‘Chet’ Greene did speak extensively on the issue of cricket and did encourage all who were there at the rally, and also, I suppose, listening via the radio to go out and support the cricket,” Khan said.
“So we want to thank them for their support on both sides with regards to the cricket coming up on the 28th February, 2nd March and the 5th March.”
Tickets are $40 for unreserved and $55 for reserved during all three matches.
