Jamaica edge T&T in Under 17 thriller

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago - Round 3 of the WICB Tobago House of Assembly Regional Under 17 Tournament completed today across three venues on the island of Tobago.

Following are the reports on all three matches:

AT LOUIS D'OR - LEEWARD ISLANDS v GUYANA

Ross Powell's 90 helped the Leeward Islands pick up their first win of the West Indies Cricket Board/Tobago House of Assembly's Regional Under 17 Tournament, 2013.

In winning the toss and opting to bat first, the opener struck eight fours and a six in his 150 ball knock to usher the Leewards to a competitive score of 212/9. Fellow opener, Kasey Carty made 25, in an opening stand that put on 54 runs.

Only three other Leewards' batsmen got into double figures, none going past 20 runs. Daniel Lewis was the pick of the Guyanese bowlers, delivering 8-2-13-3 while Brandon Prasad had two wickets.

In this bottom-of-the-table fixture, 212 proved to be too much for the Guyanese as their top order fell away. After five overs, the Guyanese were 24/3. Fighting knocks by Kemo Paul (53), Brandon Prasad (35) and Keanu Harry (36) gave Guyana a fighting chance, but ultimately, the Windwards had done enough to ensure victory by 20 runs.

Alzarri Joseph finished with 10-0-40-5 as the the Leewards picked up 0.8 extra bowling points.

AT BON ACCORD - T&T v JAMAICA

A gritty 'never-say-die' innings of 59 by Shahid Crooks pulled Jamaica from the brink of defeat against Trinidad and Tobago in their Round III match. Jamaica were labouring in their pursuit of 258 for victory at Bon Accord, but managed to catch up thanks to some late hitting from Crooks.

Earlier, T&T had won the toss and elected to bat. Opener, Amir Jangoo led his side from the top with a stroke-filled 81, that included seven fours and a six. His knock lasted 353 minutes as he played out 120 balls. Clevon Kalawan was the second highest scorer of the T&T innings, getting 57.

Bryan Boodram also played well for his 35. Crooks and Lenardo Salmon both took two wickets for the Jamaicans.

For much of the Jamaican chase, 257 runs looked good, as the visitors played catch up for most of the match. At 177/5 with ten overs to go, T&T would have felt they had done enough to ensure victory. But out came Crooks, who blasted three fours and four sixes in his unbeaten 59 to lead a late Jamaican surge.

In the last over, Jamaica needed eight runs for victory, and they got there with one to spare. Kalwan, Jyd Goolie and Varindra Jarup all took two wickets for T&T.
