Georgetown, Guyana - Sixteen-year-old Shimron Hetmyer was as surprised as he was elated with his call-up for the West Indies Under-19 team, to face Bangladesh Under-19 in a seven-match one-day series to be played in Guyana from October 5-21.

Hetmyer is joined by fellow Guyanese, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie and opening batsman Tagnarine Chanderpaul in the 17-man squad announced by the West Indies Cricket Board on Tuesday.

“It is a great feeling to represent West Indies at any level. And, all I am looking for is to stay focused and live up to the expectations,” Hetmyer told Guyana Times Sport on Wednesday from his home in Canje.

The left-handed opening batsman, who plies his trade with the Young Warriors Cricket Club in Berbice, said the call-up to the team was a pleasant surprise after representing Guyana in the just-concluded Regional Under-19 tournament with little success.

The Berbician scored only two fifties from both formats of the tournament with the highest score of 92 against Trinidad and Tobago. He represented Guyana once at the Under-15 level, twice at the Under-17 and now at the Under-19 level.

“When Mr Butts told me that I was selected, I was surprised, because I know to myself I haven’t performed as well in the regional tournament. Nevertheless I am happy” Hetmyer admitted.

The former Berbice High School student said that the tournament is certainly an ideal opportunity for him to develop his game.

“I want to use this tournament to develop my game, it’s a big step in my career so I am looking forward to it,” Hetmyer concluded.

Meanwhile, the squad consists of six players from Jamaica, who won the Regional Under-19 titles this year, claiming the Three-Day and 50-Over trophies. The regional junior side will take on the Bangladeshis at three venues – the Guyana National Stadium, Bourda and Everest.

The Bangladeshis will play a warm-up game against Guyana Uunder-19 on October 5 at Bourda before playing the West Indies junior team on October 7 at the Guyana National Stadium, October 9 at Bourda, October 11 at Guyana National Stadium, October 14 at Everest, October 16 at the Guyana National Stadium, October 19 at Bourda and October 21 at Everest.

The games for the Guyana National Stadium are day/night fixtures and will start at 13:30h. The other games scheduled for Bourda and Everest will begin at 09:00h.

The full squad reads: Fabian Allen (Jamaica), Jofra Archer (Barbados), Tagenarine Chanderpaul (Guyana), Bryan Charles (Trinidad & Tobago), Tristan Coleman (Jamaica), Taryck Gabriel , (Windward Islands, St Lucia), Shimron Hetmyre (Guyana), Jerome Jones (Barbados), Ray Jordan (Windward Islands, St Vincent), Alzarri Joseph (Leeward Islands, Antigua), Brandon King (Jamaica), Ramaal Lewis (Jamaica), Leroy Lug (Jamaica), Preston McSween (Windward Islands, Grenada), Marquino Mindley (Jamaica), Gudakesh Motie (Guyana) and Jeremy Solozano (Trinidad & Tobago).
