GCB names squad to face Bangladesh

Georgetown, Guyana - After failing to make the national Under-19 team which travelled to St Kitts to compete in this year’s West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Under-19 tournament, several players have found favour with the selectors for Guyana’s upcoming Under-19 fixture against Bangladesh.

The game, which will be used by the visitors as a practice encounter ahead of their seven-match series against the West Indies, is scheduled for the once famous Georgetown Cricket Club ground on October 5 and bowls off at 09:00hrs.

Among those players who were not selected to represent Guyana earlier this year, is Demerara Cricket Club wicketkeeper-batsman Kemol Savory, who last year led his club’s ‘B’ team to the Georgetown Cricket Association’s Under-19 title, defeating their more illustrious ‘A’ team opponents.

In an invited comment with Chronicle Sport, Savory said he was excited to be selected for the practice fixture and is eagerly looking forward to giving of his best, both behind and in front of the stumps for Guyana.

“It is always an honour for one to represent one’s country in any given sport. When I did not make the team to go to St Kitts, I went back to the club, worked and trained hard and eventually got a call-up for the Demerara Inter-county trials.

“I did not make that team, but I am looking forward now to going out there on October 5 and working hard for Guyana in front and behind the stumps, with the aim of etching my name in the selectors’ minds for next year’s Under-19 tournament.”

Apart from Savory, Shivram Persaud, Ricardo Peters, Shailendra Shameer and Sharaz Ramcharran were unable to make the national team and were placed on the standby list, while Martin Pestano-Belle and his GCC teammates Bernard Bailey and Ricardo Mohammed along with Ryan Shun, were not considered.

They all have the opportunity to impress the selectors and to give just reason why they should have been selected when they go up against Bangladesh, especially given the fact that Guyana failed to win the championship.

Six players from the National Under-19 team, namely skipper Shawn Pereira, Kamesh Yadram, Vishal Narayan, Steven Sankar, Herry Greene and Romario Shepherd-DeJonge are included in the squad which will be in camp October 2-4, 2013 and are asked to make contact with the manager and coach urgently by the GCB.

The squad reads: Ricardo Peters, Ryan Shun, Kamesh Yadram, Shawn Pereira, Sharaz Ramcharran, Kemol Savory, Vishal Narayan, Steven Sankar, Herry Greene, Martin Pestano-Belle, Romario Shepherd, Kemo Paul, Shailendra Shameer, Ricardo Mohamed, Shivram Persaud and Bernard Bailey.

The manager is David Black while Adrian Amsterdam has been appointed coach - the same pair who managed the team during the WICB tournament in St Kitts.
