Gayle out, Bernard to lead Jamaica

Jamaica Observer article.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) has confirmed that captain and left-handed opener Chris Gayle will miss the upcoming NAGICO Super50 regional competition.

The 34-year-old Gayle injured his hamstring on the tour of India late last year and has not been passed fit to represent Jamaica in the 50-over tournament.

Out-of-favour West Indies all-rounder David Bernard will now lead the team, while left-arm spinner Nikita Miller will be his deputy.

Kenar Lewis, a powerful top-order batsman, will replace Gayle in the 14-man squad.

The NAGICO Super50 tournament is set for January 30 to February 15 in Trinidad.

Matches are scheduled to be broadcast live on cable network ESPN.

Squad — David Bernard (captain), Nikita Miller (vice-captain), Kenar Lewis, John Campbell, Nkrumah Bonner, Jermaine Blackwood, Horace Miller, Andre McCarthy, Tamar Lambert, Andre Russell, Carlton Baugh, Andrew Richardson, Sheldon Cottrell, Jerome Taylor.
