St George's, Grenada - Guyana’s female cricket team will depart these shores this morning for Grenada where they will participate in this year’s West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Senior Regional Women’s Cricket Tournament.
The 50-over tournament will be played from August 5 to 14 while the Twenty20 tournament will run from August 16 to 22.
West Indies players June Ogle and Tremayne Smartt were named captain of the One-Day and T20 teams respectively.
In an invited comment on Friday, coach Andre Percival said he was confident that the team would do well in both tournaments, despite the brief period they have had to prepare.
The 14-member team along with the six reserves went through a five-day training camp at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence at LBI.
“We had a short camp, but it was a very intense one. We looked at the basis batting, bowling and fielding.
“We also had some turf practice, so I am confident the team will perform well in the tournament, the players are also confident despite insufficient preparation,” Percival added.
He said fitness was the biggest problem he faced with the players when the camp started but admitted the fitness level of each player has improved significantly.
Meanwhile, Ogle and Smartt expressed confidence in the team putting on a good show.
The Guyanese will be in action on August 5 when they oppose Dominica.
