Bridgetown, Barbados - The inaugural Christ Church West Central HIV/AIDS Youth Development Programme Twenty20 Tape-ball Cricket Competition was officially launched on Saturday night at the Maxwell Sports Club, Briar Hall, Christ Church.

Eight teams – Vauxhall, Maxwell, Foundation, Deighton Griffith Old Scholars, De Hole, Rendezvous, GT Massive, Cane Vale – will compete in this inaugural tournament which is scheduled to culminate on Sunday December 8.

The Hon. Stephen Lashley, Parliamentary representative for Christ Church West Central and Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth called the tournament an important youth development programme.

He noted that two years ago he was approached by a group of young men from the constituency who was desirous of having a tape ball cricket tournament within the constituency.

“I gave them the task of putting together what type of competition they wanted to have. I was fully aware that part of the vision of the Youth Division is put in place programmes that engage the attention of our young people, in particularly our young males,” said Lashley.

Lashley noted that having the tournament take place in November was no accident as they wanted to see it evolve as a celebration of nationhood within the context of community activism.

All matches will take place from 6 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday – weather permitting – at the Maxwell Sports Club in Briar Hall. The tournament will continue this Saturday November 16 with GT Massive taking on Vauxhall at 6 p.m. while Rendezvous will face Cane Vale in the night cap game at 9 p.m.
