Charles hits 72 in Windwards warm-up win

Georgetown, Guyana, CMC – Johnson Charles is looking good ahead of the WICB Regional Super50 Series as he stroked an attractive 72 to lead Windward Islands to a comfortable six-wicket win over Leewards Islands in the first of two warm-up matches on Saturday.

The 22-year-old right-hander played several handsome shots as he smashed 11 fours and three sixes as Windwards reached 159 for four off 25.4 overs, overhauling the Leewards’ 157 all out off 34.4 overs at the Demerara Cricket Club.

Andre Fletcher, one of four players with West Indies experience in the Windwards team, was removed by seamer Gavin Tonge for 16 at 52 for one.

Charles, who played two T20 Internationals for West Indies in England last month, then added 86 for the second wicket with Keddy Lesporis who stroked 42.

When Charles was caught behind off spinner Jacques Taylor at 138 for two, Lesporis and Liam Sebastian (5) followed quickly after but Hyron Shallow struck consecutive boundaries to finish on eight and see the Windwards home.

Earlier, the Leewards got 39 from English County professional Chesney Hughes while Austin Richards (34) and Javia Liburd (20) played supporting roles, after the game was reduced to 35 overs per side because of rain.

Left-arm spinner Garey Mathurin finished with four for 20 from his six overs and got support from fellow left-armer Denis George who claimed three for 41. The teams will meet again at the same venue on Monday in their final warm-up match.

The Windwards face host Guyana in Zone A at the National Stadium in the opening round on Wednesday. The Leewards face Jamaica at the same venue in their first round match on Thursday in a Zone B clash.
