BCB/Berbice River Bridge First Division 50-Over
GEORGETOWN, GUYANA - The inaugural 2013 Berbice River Bridge First Division 50-Over Knockout Cricket Competition in Berbice got started last Sunday with five first-round matches, resulting with victories for Port Mourant Karibee Rice, West Berbice, Skeldon Community Centre, Blairmont Community Centre and Albion Community Centre who all advanced to the second round.
Devendra Thakurdeen hit 77 (4x4) and Yudendra Harrinarine (64) helped Port Mourant post 227 for 6 in 42 overs against Police who in their reply, saw Elon Schultz score 67 (6x4, 2x6) and Albert Sinclair 49, challenging the target strongly but ending up two runs short with Harrinarine coming back with the ball and taking 4 for 56 from 9 overs.
Performing outstandingly with the ball was West Berbice off-spinner Steffon Adams who took career-best figures of 6 for 11 from 7.3 overs which was mainly responsible for Bush Lot United Rising Star being bowled out for 116 in 24.3 overs and, led by an unbeaten 42 from Arthley Bailey, West Berbice went on to win by six wickets.
Viendra Gooniah made 60 and Sherwin Murray 53 (4x6, 1x4) to steer Skeldon Community Centre to 222 all out in 40 overs against Upper Corentyne who ended up losing by 14 runs despite Jameel Azad hitting 56 (5x4) and Ryan Ramdass 49.
National cricketer Leon Johnson, playing in his first match for Blairmont Community Centre, took 4 for 20 from 9 overs to help restrict Edinburgh to 124 in 33.4 overs then scored 39 to steer Blairmont to a 7-wicket win.
Albion Community Centre did well to bowl out Bermine for 93 with West Indies leg-spinner Veerasammy Permaul taking 5 for 13 from 8 overs in 35 overs but in reply they soon found themselves on shaky ground at 48 for 5 and 74 for 7 before Satesh Dwarka (8 n.o.) and Gudakesh Motie (6 n.o) saw them through.

At Port Mourant, Port Mourant Karibee Rice beat Police by 2 runs.
In the match reduced to 42 overs-a-side because of the late arrival of the Police team, Port Mourant Karibee Rice chose to bat first and made 227 for 6 in 42 overs with Devendra Thakurdeen 77, Yudendra Harrinarine 64, Joshua Ramsammy 29 and Tony McKenzie 22. Bowling for Police, Rocky Hutson took 2 for 46 from 8 overs and Albert Sinclair 2 for 56 from 8 overs.
Police scored 225 for 9 in 42 overs with Elon Schultz 67, Albert Sinclair 49, Leon Andrews 33. Bowling for Port Mourant Yudendra Harrinarine took 4 for 56 and George Hughes 2 for 27 from 4 overs.
At Bush Lot in West Berbice, West Berbice beat Bush Lot United Rising Star by 6 wickets.
In the match reduced to 42 overs-a-side because of late preparation, Bush Lot United Rising Star, losing the toss and sent in to take first strike, made 116 in 24.3 overs with Asif Khan 41, Brentnol Woolford 28. Bowling for West Berbice Steffon Adams tool 6 for 11.
West Berbice made 117 for 4 in 17 overs with Arthley Bailey 42 not out. Bowling for Bush Lot Delon Joseph took 2 for 34 from 5 overs.
At Skeldon, Skeldon Community Centre beat Upper Corentyne by 14 runs.
With this match reduced to 40 overs-a-side because of the late preparation of the Skeldon pitch, Skeldon Community Centre, sent in to take first strike, made 222 in 40 overs with Viendra Gooniah 60, Sherwin Murray 53.
Bowling for Upper Corentyne Jameel Azad took 3 for 28 from 6.4 overs, Clavern Beresford 2 for 18 from 8 overs and Latchman Roopchand 2 for 37 from 8 overs.
Upper Corentyne made 208 in 39.3 overs with Jameel Azad 56, Ryan Ramdass 49, Deoprakash Ramdat 25. Bowling for Skeldon, Victor Pedre took 3 for 34 from 8 overs, Parmanand Narine 2 for 19 from 8 overs and Junior Blair 2 for 26 from 6 overs.
At Edinburgh, Blairmont Community Centre beat Edinburgh by 7 wickets.
This match was reduced to 43 overs-a-side because of the late arrival of the Blairmont team, Edinburgh chose to bat first and made 124 in 33.4 overs with Jamal Henry 34. Bowling for Blairmont, Leon Johnson took 4 for 20 Kevon Jawahir 3 for 15 from 6 overs and Waqar Hassan 2 for 37 from 8 overs.
Blairmont Community Centre 126 for 3 in 24.1 with Nick Ramsaroop 47 and Leon Johnson 39.
At Albion, Albion Community Centre beat Bermine by 3 wickets.
This match also saw its overs reduced to 40 overs-a-side but this time due to the lone umpire turning up late, Bermine chose to bat first and recorded 93 in 35 overs with Keion De Jesus 24. Bowling for Albion, Veerasammy Permaul took 5 for 13 from 8 overs and Satesh Dwarka 2 for 17 from 6 overs.
Albion Community Centre got 95 for 7 in 26.4 with Kandasammy Surujnarine 23. Bowling for Bermine, Damien Vantull took 2 for 21 from 8 overs and Stephen Latcha 2 for 25 from 8 overs.
The competition continues on Saturday with second-round matches.
