Barbados stun T&T, Windwards ease

St Elizabeth, Jamaica - The second and final day of the second round of matches in the Regional Under 15 tournament was completed today across three venues in Jamaica.

Here are the details:

AT STETHS - Guyana v Windward Islands

An unbeaten second-wicket partnership between Grenadians Johann Jeremiah and Emmanuel Stewart steered the Windward Islands to a nine-wicket victory over Guyana in their second round match of the West Indies Under-15 Cricket Tournament being played in Jamaica.

Set a target of 54 runs for victory, the Grenadians set about the task after Jeremiah lost his opening partner in Vice-captain St.Lucian Nick Elibox with the score on 19. He was joined by his skipper Stewart as they reached their target safely.

Jeremiah and Stewart were unbeaten on 27 and 17 respectively in the Windwards’ total of 55 for one off 15.4 overs.

Earlier, the Guyanese failed to pass 100 runs yet again as they were bundled out for 99 in their second innings with another Grenadian Narun Singh taking three for 20 off nine overs to finish with match figures of six for 34 off 14 overs including five maidens.

Alic Athanaze from Dominica also took three wickets, with St.Lucian Johnell Eugene  – the son of former Windward Islands player John Eugene – and Shane Roberts of St Vincent finishing with two wickets each.

Timothy McAlmont was the only Guyana batsman to provide some resistance in their second innings in a knock of 41 which included five fours off 73 balls before going LBW to Athanaze.

The Windward Islands will next play Barbados in the third round of competition, starting on Friday at the same venue. Courtesy CMC

AT MANLEY HORN - Jamaica v Leeward Islands

Tassilo Allen put in a strong performance with both bat and ball but it was in vain as hosts Jamaica inflicted more misery on the Leeward Islands. The Leewards began the second and final day on 17/4, leading Jamaica by 12 runs.

Allen was only one of two Leeward Islands batsmen to get into double figures. He hit a quick 19 to usher the Leewards to 76 all out, effectively setting Jamaica 72 runs for victory.

He single-handedly led the Leewards response, scaring Jamaica with a string of quick wickets. Allen removed Richard McIntosh for 9 with the score on 22 and then made several bursts after that. Jamaica were quickly reduced to 31/2, then 33/3 and finally 48/4. However, an unbeaten 21 from captain Brad Barnes got Jamaica over the line.

Allen took all four wickets to finish the innings with figures of 9.4-0-33-4. His efforts were futile though as Jamaica won by 6 wickets.

AT ALPART - Barbados v Trinidad & Tobago

A remarkable, unbeaten 45 by Barbados wicket-keeper, Michael Stuart, paved the way for Barbados to come from behind and defeat Trinidad & Tobago. Barbados looked all but out of the contest heading into Day 2 on 53/5.

Things looked even grimmer when they reduced early in the first session to 59/9, Stuart struck four fours and one six in his knock to revive the Bajan second innings along with Joshua Bishop (33). Amrit Kistow finished with 5-24 for T&T but not before Barbados got to 126 all out.

It meant T&T required 87 runs for victory. It seemed still well within their grasp. However, Jarion Hoyte and Joshua Bishop combined in a lethal spell of bowling that destroyed the T&T batting. Both bowlers finished with four wickets each. Crystian Thurton was the top scorer for T&T with 26. Barbados bowled the Red Force for 64, winning by 22 runs.
