Amla helps deal Amazon Warriors first defeat

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – South African Hashim Amla stroked his third half-century of the Caribbean Premier League as Trinbago Knight Riders dealt leaders Guyana Amazon Warriors their first defeat with a seven-run victory here Sunday night.

Sent in at the National Stadium, Knight Riders defied the run of low scores on the notoriously difficult pitch to rally to 151 for four off their 20 overs, thanks mainly to Amla who topscored with 64 from 54 deliveries.

Captain Dwayne Bravo produced a cameo 25 from a mere eight balls while Pakistani Umar Akmal carved out an unbeaten 23 from 22.

Seamer Rayad Emrit was the best bowler with two for 32.

In reply, captain Martin Guptill hit 50 off 40 balls and Chris Lynn, 21 off 18, but Amazon Warriors lost momentum in the second half of the innings to collapse badly, finishing on 144 for nine. They were 63 for two in the 11th over but lost their next seven wickets for 80 runs.

Left-arm spinner Anton Devcich (2-17) and off-spinner Sunil Narine (2-25) picked up two wickets apiece while medium pacers Bravo (2-33) and Kevon Cooper (2-33) finished with similar figures.

The victory hauled Knight Riders back into the race for the playoffs as they moved to four points while Amazon Warriors were kept on eight.

Looking to break a two-game losing streak, Knight Riders started solidly when Amla and Devcich put on 28 off 30 deliveries for the first wicket.

When Devcich picked out Jason Mohammed at deep mid-wicket off Emrit for seven, Amla anchored two stands to keep the innings steady.

First, he put on 42 for the second wicket with Colin Munro who made 18 and followed up with a 43-run partnership for the third wicket with Umar Akmal.

Munro was caught and bowled by left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul in the 12th over after striking a four and a six and Amla counted six fours before missing a wild heave and going bowled by leg-spinner Adam Zampa in the 18th.

Bravo then provided a flourish to the end of the innings, smacking a four and three sixes to ensure Knight Riders finished with momentum.

Devcich, in his first game of the tournament, set the tone for TKR’s win when he claimed the dangerous Dwayne Smith without scoring when the batsman holed out to long-off off the third ball of the innings, without a run on the board.

The New Zealander also prised out Lynn to a catch at mid-wicket at 25 for two in the fifth over after the Australian threatened with four fours in his knock.

Guptill and Jason Mohammed then posted the best stand of the innings with 38 for the third wicket, as the hosts regrouped.

However, Mohammed gloved a pull behind off Bravo in the 11th over to fall for 19 and Anthony Bramble followed in the 13th when he missed a pull and was bowled for four at 75 for four.

Guptill struck a four and four sixes and seemed poised to carry Amazon Warriors to victory when he fell to the first ball of the penultimate over with his side needing 30 from the last 12 balls.

He was deceived by a slower ball and was taken in the deep off Bravo and once he perished, it appeared as if the Amazon Warriors’ hopes went with him.

But Veerasammy Permaul punished Bravo, taking 16 run from the over, leaving 14 to get from the final six deliveries.

Cooper, though, sent down a top over to leave Amazon Warriors short.
